Laura Wright, wife of Florida Atlantic University offensive coordinator Brian Wright, shared her family’s mantra: “We are going to hold the rope for each other. Life is not always going to be easy but we’ve got each other, and we will get through it.”

Sometimes holding the rope involves being resilient through adversity, which Coach Wright often speaks about. Other times, though, holding the rope simply means helping loved ones get through a rough day.

If a friend has some slack in his or her rope, try a small gesture– like baking– to help them get through it. Laura’s Loaded-Up Pretzel Cookies are the perfect pick-me-up!

Loaded-Up Pretzel Cookies


  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups mini pretzels, broken into pieces
  • 1 ½ cups shredded coconut
  • 1 ½ cups milk chocolate M & M’s


Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla. In another bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually beat into creamed mixture. Stir in remaining ingredients.

Shape 1/4 cupfuls of dough into balls; place 3 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake 12 to 14 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from pans to wire rack to cool.
